IT would be nice to have a Papacy faction. The papacy faction would have the best monks. It would be like a universal faction, being able to train every single unique unit of all christian factions in its castle, as long as you do the upgrade (costly) (but only one at the time, you would have to research the other again to switch). This is to mimic the universality of the the papacy, and the fact it had a major influence on christian factions, and could basically make most christian factions to go to war. A special tech could be, the crusade. Where either your cavalry got faster. Or your conversion improved. Or you got a bonus vs Sarracens and Turks. Another special tech could be inquisition.
As for its units it should be lacking in everything except for a strong pikemen line (to mimic swiss guard). Since it should have access to many unique units. It should not have even skirms. Similar to the turks but without champions and without gunman. Below average siege. Good economy. Bonus in relics, and some bonus related to gold.
Another idea was to have the pope, instead of starting with the scout. The pope is basically a stronger monk/king, that if killed, the faction loses its ability to call other factions unique units.
