Differentiation among campaigns in AOEDE?

I played the original AOE2 back in the day, and tried my hand at AOEDE recently. I've played the campaigns up through Yamato, but my one complaint is that most scenarios feel the same. No unique units for each civ, just restricted tech trees, and no interesting scenario triggers like in AOE2.

Are there any interesting mechanics in the remaining campaigns if I've played up through Yamato? Otherwise I may move on to AOE2DE to try the expansions I never had as a kid.
