Age of Mythology-Beginner, looking for tips

Hello everyone! I used to play Age of Empires II and Age of Mythology as a kid long time ago. I primarily played campaigns at the time, and for a long time I was not interested in any type of gaming. I recently resumed playing the game online. I began by playing against the AI, which I have mastered and can easily defeat with any Gods or civilizations, even on the most difficult difficulties. When I play against a real player, however, I struggle a lot, even against lower-ranked opponents. I am basically very vulnerable to early attacks, and I lose the match in a flash. I would appreciate any and all suggestions, such as what I should do correctly or which God would be best for a beginner like me to begin mastering. Thank you!
