I just started getting back into AoE2 (thanks to YouTube's algorithm suggesting T90 Official videos). The last time I played was the Microsoft Zone days. In that era, the dominant competitive meta was Feudal rushes, meaning civs with early eco bonuses were king. Mongols were widely considered the best civ because they could have the fastest Feudal time.
In most of the modern games I've seen, Feudal rushing isn't really a thing. The competitive meta seems much more varied and vibrant than back in the day. Mongols are a late game civ, not an early game civ!
Can someone explain what exactly has changed? Were there balance changes, or was it just a natural evolution of the meta?
