1) The map control should be enhanced. Eg:
A) Farms near a water body should be comparatively more efficient or should exhaust late. This could be done in the way that efficiency or food storage of farms should be an inverse function of distance from the nearest water body.
B) Buildings should be comparatively faster built on plain terrain as compared to mountainous or rough terrain.
2) ELEMENTS OF UNCERTAINTY (This is cool)
A) Natural disasters should be introduced such as
-
Earthquakes: Damages health of buildings or may destroy small buildings such as houses or lumber camps. It will also kill those units that where garrisoned inside the building during earthquake.

Flooding : A feature of water maps. Water from the water bodies will flood the land. Galleys and fire ships could sail over it for sometime until it recedes. The flooding will also destroy all the farm lands that will come under its impact.

B) plus new technologies could be brought in to make civilizations earthquake or flood resistant.
3) SYSTEM OF LOANS ALONG WITH TRIBUTE FEATURE
Players can give a loan of resources to their allies/enemies which should be returned after a certain period of time with a specified interest.
