Age of Empires II Definitive Edition from Steam keeps crashing. Compatibility issue with laptop?

Hi guys.

First time poster here and read the subreddit rules so I hope this is allowed here. I've about run out of options trying to figure out a solution to this problem. I just downloaded Steam today without any problem and immediately purchased Age of Empires II The Definitive Edition.

Both the game and Steam installed just fine. No interruptions and everything was smooth up until the point when I tried to launch the game. It's crashing every single time I try to play it. I can't even get to the main menu without it crashing. Sometimes it just freezes on the main loading picture before the intro.

I can play games through GoG just fine without any problems so at this point I don't know if it's a Steam related issue or a problem with my laptop. My running system is windows 10 Home version 1909 with 196gbs free of storage space.

Laptop is an HP E1-2000 with 8gbs of ram and 7.60 usable.

At this point I'm completely lost as to what I can do in order to get the computer to run the game or if the issue is on Steam's end and I need to contact them.
