Would you recommend?

(I'm sure you've all been asked this before but I couldn't find anything surprisingly)

Hi guys/girls, I know asking if this is a game worth playing to this subreddit seems kind of pointless because most people will say yes. But I was wondering if it really is worth playing. I mainly ask because a bunch of my friends have this game and have played it since they were young. They keep telling me to get it, but I've never really played any RTS games before. The closest thing I've played is Civ and Warhammer: Total War II and I get my ass handed to me in those games. I'm more of a sports and fps gamer.

I guess what I'm really trying to ask here is, is AOE2 a good game for someone who has virtually no experience playing rts games? Or is it going to be a gruesome experience that I should just grind through? It looks super interesting and I've been wanting to branch out to other genres of games. I've been playing single player, fps multiplayer, and sports games for about 15 years now and it's getting kind of stale.
