I know a couple months ago Sixty made a post where he asked for mod volunteers, but that was a small part of a post that got really wrapped up in all the sidebar stuff. I'd much rather start fresh with a new post and some more details about what I'd like to see from new mods.
With all the news coming out about the definitive editions and even Age of Empires 4, this sub is going to get another surge of activity it hasn't seen since HD was released. Our sub is bigger than all other Age of Empires subs combined. While we will try to keep this sub focused on Age of Empires 2, you can't deny there's going to be a lot of members in this community interested in new Age of Empires 4 news. With the definitive editions coming out, we're going to see a change in the playerbase. And we're also seeing a surge in esports competitions. All of this adds up to a need for some new mods. We haven't added a new, permanent, mod in 4 years.
With this post, I would like to add two mods to the squad and would like for them to fulfill specific functions that I'll detail below:
- An Esports/Tournament Mod
I really regret not having a discussion thread up for the EuroCup. It's not that I couldn't do it. I just didn't think about it, and I should have. If you volunteer for this position, that sort of thing would be your responsibility. You should be ready to create discussion threads for any major ongoing tournaments. (If you participate in any sports subreddits, think of this like a "Game Day" thread where people can come and leave comments while the games unfold.)
Another issue with these tournaments is it's hard to get details on when they're starting and where you can see them. This mod would be expected to create a weekly or once-every-two-weeks thread detailing upcoming tournaments and where to watch them (depending on how many are actually going on, obviously.) This would be a great way to promote smaller tournaments as well.
This mod needs to be unbiased. Covering tournaments no matter what platform they're on will be important. You might not play HD, but you should still promote tournaments on it. Of course, that also means you need to be someone who's active in the voobly community to know what tournaments are happening there.
- A Community Engagement mod
For this mod, I think it's about time we started leveraging this 28,000 villager population into something more than a stagnant economy. Let's start getting active. I'd like to see someone volunteer for this position who doesn't mind hosting a game night, or finding volunteers to host a game night. If you can stream, maybe we stream the game night for people who can't directly participate.
The game night would be a big thing of course, but there are smaller things a mod like this can do as well. Much like the first mod can create discussion threads during ongoing tourneys, this mod could create discussion threads about a variety of topics. Maybe if a popular YouTuber releases a new video, we could have a community discussion. Or have a Strategy Sunday thread where we break down major gameplay strategies. Or a thread where people can post recordings of their play and have it analyzed. Things like that don't have to be unnecessarily complicated, and these are just ideas.
Basic requirements for applying:
-
You need to be active on Reddit and in this community.
-
Tell me which position you want.
-
Don't let the power go to your head. For the most part, modding is 90% spam and douchebag removal. It's not really very fun.
To apply:
-
Send me a private message and convince me you should be a mod. This is important because sometimes people get volunteered when they don't want to be or aren't really as serious about it as others are. Going through the minimum of effort at least tells me you've thought about it.
-
Post a public comment here stating your intentions because I'd like the community's viewpoint on this as well.
Understand that I'm not trying to overload you with things you have to do as mods. These are all just ideas. You will be free to do whatever the heck you want, and I invite you to come up with your own ideas when volunteering. If there's a different angle you'd like to bring to being a mod, please share it with me.
