Sound and vacuum

I've just joined Reddit and this is the first thing I've ever written on here. I've mostly been reading all the amazing stuff:)

My question is related to sound in a vacuum.

Since space is a vacuum there is no way for sound to travel since sound needs a medium to travel through. Can an escaped gas "hold" sound? Or is it that the gas will dissipate so quickly that he sound also dissipates and disappears?

Related to that, if you were touching a giant gong in space and someone hit it would you be able to feel it but not hear it?

So many questions.
