Instead of a monk "converting" a unit to the true [and often the exact same] faith we should have a treason mechanic where units could be paid to switch sides. This would make the game more immersive as well as being a refresh of a mechanic that in my opinion is a bit outdated.
Here's how my idea could work
From the university, players would train a diplomat who would function exactly as a monk on the field in regard to conversions. The diplomat would have a varying conversion/treason skill (which would be upgraded from the university), a conversion/treason range just like the monk, a conversion/treason cooldown etc.
However, unlike the monk, when converting a unit the diplomat would have to have a minimum amount of funds available (always gold) and each unit conversion/treason/defection, if successful, would cost a certain amount depending on the original cost of that unit. This could be balanced by a low - and non gold - cost for training the diplomat, but also a long training time [so as to avoid players abusing the mechanic by spamming diplomats].
Different units would have a different susceptibility to betraying their civ. while elite/unique (castle built) faction units could be immune to treason.
I am open to debating the merits of my idea of course and would very much like to see what people think about it.
Cheers
