I used to play this game when it was released and I am trying to get it to run on my Mac. I had some success using the following procedure:
- Install Wine.
- Copy pidgen.dll from the CD and mfc42.dll from an old Windows machine.
- Install AoM from CD with Wine.
- Install and run Voobly with Wine.
- Launch a single player game in Voobly or using aomxnocd.exe.
Single player games seem to work. It crashed once during my first game, but I also managed to play 30 minutes skirmishes against AI with the only issue being a graphical glitch that affects water and fog of war. Oddly enough, halfway through the first mission of the campaign the water turned normal but this has only happened once. Any idea if the graphical glitch can be fixed on Wine? It would be nice to know if it a solution exists before I start modifying the graphics card settings. Opaque water and low-resolution cinematics are not too bad, but not being able to see the fog of war borders affects gameplay negatively.
Multi player games on Voobly on the other hand don’t work at all. AoM crashes immediately after launching whether I host or join a game with another player. The technical report/backtrace is not very telling so I cannot see if it is a network issue, compatibility issue or something else. Anyone had similar experiences and how did you fix it?
