More ruins
As the Ruins doodad is the greek barracks, as seen here http://ift.tt/2uzAohm I was wondering, is there a mod that ads more AoE1 ruined barracks? Is there interest for this? Having ruined roman (iron age) barracks would enhance Attila and Alaric campaigns, and having even more ruined (iron age) barracks would enhance the whole historical campaign angle of the game, in my opinion.

Advice for a casual? Not trying to become a pro, but some small improvements. :)
I've played AoE since the first one. And for much of that time, I've played as a filthy casual. More of a sandbox and city builder almost. heh.
I've been trying to up my game a little bit. I mean, I don't want to sit and crunch numbers, or totally micro my vils, but I figure a little discussion might help me up the AI difficulty I'm playing on. (I cannot stand losing, so I'm also trying to overcome that distaste and teach myself it's okay to lose).
So usually what I do when I start a game:
- Send all but two vils chopping wood - clearing out lone trees around the TC, or if I'm lucky, off to a forest to build a logging camp.
- One vil to build a mill at the berries if they exist, or sheep, or deer.
- One vil to build my first house
- Set TC to build another vil to max pop
- Start scouting in concentric circles around my TC to open up the map.
I put high priority on villagers - collecting wood and any food resources. Once easy food is gone, it's a mill + farms. I like to have nine farms surrounding my mill, and later when I can, around a dozen surrounding (less neatly) my TC.
Since I play AI on low enough difficulties, I don't have to start an army immediately, although I'll train five soldiers before I age up.
I also get vils on stone and gold asap.
When I play my wife, I tend to hugely out-do her on resources and army, probably because I try to maximize my villager count. About half my pop goes into villagers.
So I know that's not a ton of details, but... any suggestions for me? Even if I don't take your advice because it seems too much of a pain for what I want, I do honestly appreciate any input. And I'll try to try anything once, at least. :)

what to do when you rush their flank as flank and you basically make him irrelevant but then their pocket knight rushes you over and over and your pocket is just wanking?
title
had a 3vs3 where i basically made their flank completely irrelevant for 30 minutes, he was still in dark age at 15 minutes, problem is, since i raided him hard, i couldn't obviously fast castle
so his dude on pocket on huns just fast castles and runs me over and over with knights while i'm still feudal, and i just can't do anything because i made sure to raid his flank and couldn't fast castle nor raid him
my pocket doesn't do shit to prevent it, doesn't even raid their pocket as response
what to do?
just don't rush in teamgames?

Jihad
So, I have somehow just learned last night that the Jihad technology not only makes your villagers slightly better fighters, but actually makes them much worse workers.
Usually I don't get the tech until it's go time so honestly I never payed attention to the eventual resource decline.
With that in mind, how on earth is this tech ever considered viable? Even with it villagers are not good soldiers, and now they're terrible workers too.

How to beat Men-at-Arms + trush?
I know how to beat a regular naked trush; just vill fight and/or make defensive towers, and counterattack. Or get to castle age ASAP and make a ram/mangonel. A naked trush is very all-in and usually only wins because the opponent panicks. But what do you do when he shows up with forward towers, AND 3 Men-at-Arms? Vill fighting doesn't work since they have m@a, making defensive towers doesn't work when he just goes and shanks your tower with m@a and vills, and the regular calm response that you use against naked trushes doesn't work since he has m@a which can go into your woodline and kill vills.

Sound and vacuum
I've just joined Reddit and this is the first thing I've ever written on here. I've mostly been reading all the amazing stuff:)
My question is related to sound in a vacuum.
Since space is a vacuum there is no way for sound to travel since sound needs a medium to travel through. Can an escaped gas "hold" sound? Or is it that the gas will dissipate so quickly that he sound also dissipates and disappears?
Related to that, if you were touching a giant gong in space and someone hit it would you be able to feel it but not hear it?
So many questions.

So I own a copy of the officially AOE2 strategy guide from waay back in the day. A lot of the strategy guide included various rushes from a player named Out4blood. I have never actually seen about who this player was or if he was actually even a member of the community. Am I an idiot? What I did wrong for complain about this?
So basically I played a 4 vs 4 friendly match. I was pocket. We start playing and at certain point the red (the other pocket teammate) start building 6 market, 1 university and 1 forging on my territory. I say him to stop but no asnwer from him. Then I start building house in the empty space left by his markets. I needed that space. I had no other place where to build houses. Then he raged and he start saying I should **** myself and I should stop building houses. We start offending each other. At one hour of game, the teal (flank teammate) say sorry because he would have been defeated soon. I took a look at him... and after 1 hour of game he was still at feudal age doing nothing, with a score of 1000. After this, he asked for some stone. I was still irritable by what red did to me so I say him to shut up. He answered saying I'm a bad person and I should unistall aoe2.
Of course we lost. Before quitting, the last (blue) teammate said I'm an idiot. But why? Is ground zero teammates or not play at all the new way to play this game? I shouldn't complain about what they did? I really have no idea, please help me to understand.

Resources for practicing Fermi problems?
Hello,
I had a really important interview today and managed to completely embarrass myself on a Fermi problem. I've never been really good at them, but this one... worst answer the interviewer ever heard. I did better on the second Fermi problem-calmed down and tried to go slower-and got a decent answer, but I still didn't do as well as I hoped. I needed a little nudge from the interviewer.
I actually realized that-once you took away the massive level of nervousness I was undergoing at the time-that I found the Fermi problem kind of fun. More importantly, I don't ever want to screw up like that again. Part of this is simply improving my verbal communication skills, which have never been good, but part of this is getting better at these sorts of teasers, which is a nice way of testing my logic skills, too. So: does anybody know a resource out there so I can get better at this? This might actually be a nice relaxation from my other studies.

Slavs are a pretty great KotH civ
I've won a few community games (nothing big) with them and I had great experiences.
Cheaper siege and their unique infantry tech make keeping the middle easier than other power house civs like the mongols. Spamming siege ram with halbs and champions is cheap and doesn't put you out of the game if you lose the middle once, but can win you the game if you have good timing.
I just never see them chosen in T90's community games.

Teutons Rework by me
i really like the teutons, but i think they are a little bit underpower, so here is my rework 1-change the castle age unique tech, this tech will give the teutons castles the ability to shot 2 bombard tower projectiles, arrows (from towers or castles) and bombard towers projectiles have a 10+ damage to siege units, and it also will give the castle +4 range 2- change the imperial age unique tech, the new one it's going to be called "Honor And Religion" this will make the teonic knights Inmune to Monks and it will give them the ability to heal (15 health per minute), wait, just wait, lemme explain the teutonic knights are basically Military Monks so, in AOE, the Monks heal so, why not? 3- change that thing of "towers can garrison +10 units" for a "+1 projectile armor for infantry units in feudal age, +2 melee armor in castle age and 2+attack in imperial age" 4-remove Squires 5-add thumbring 6-add Herbal Medicine 7-Herbal Medicine is free (but u need to research it)

- Right click "Age of Empires II: HD Edition" in your Steam library.
- Click on properties.
- Click on "Set launch options..."
- Type in "OLD_SCHOOL" (without quotation marks)
- Click "Close" and then start the game.

On the 1v1 ladder, it says:

HET vs Astrophysics Undergrad Research
I've heard that some grad schools want you to know which subfield you want to go into when you apply. I want to do HET, but I'm afraid I won't be a competitive applicant. I am going into my junior year and I need to decide which area to do research in (because I'm told I need to start specializing in my last two years). Should I do research in something less competitive (astrophysics maybe?) and then put that as my preferred subfield to increase my chances of getting into a good school (switching fields after getting in), or should I do HET research anyway and then say I want to probably do a different area of physics (which, given the jumping around I've done, will probably be plausible to someone reading my application)? Or should I do something entirely different strategically?

Byzantines on water maps in the expansions
Hey dudes! Wait that's not my usual intro. Oh well, screw the intro this is a Reddit post. I can just get on with it.
In the expansions, Fire Galleys are the new dominant water unit in the early game (with people occasionally using Galleys and War Galleys, but always opening with fires). And the Byzantines have +25% attack speed on their fires. This seems incredibly strong, because early game water engagements are really important to control water so you can win the game, and the Byzantines win basically all engagements. No other Fire Galleys can contest them. The Byzantines also have +4 LoS for free on their Docks in the Feudal Age because of free Town Watch and their Docks also have extra HP increasing each age, AND the Byzantines get a unique tech in the Castle that gives their Fire Ships +1 range, AND the Byzantines get a 33% cheaper imp, allowing you to get to imp and retake water with fast fires very quickly.
Seem like a pretty good water civ to me. Think they can contest other civs, like post-5.5 Italians?

Potential for DE to continue the AI potential as UP has
Starcraft has AI development tornements, I believe partly because Starcraft's API enables AI to do more things, so people are able to develop much smarter AI.
If DE incorporates all the new extra AI capabilities that UP has (I don't understand why HD didn't do this too), I feel like AI could become great and AI development tornements could be a really fun and alternative aspect to AoE2 DE.

What should the Persian Castle Age UT be changed to?
Currently it grants minor bonus damage against rams, and is widely regarded as pointless.
I'd suggest ''Cataphract Archers'' as a replacement UT, giving their cav archers more armour (2/2 or so?). I think it'd suit Persia quite well to have heavy-armoured cav archers with no Bracer.
If they keep Boiling Oil in, then they should probably double or triple the bonus and make it affect towers and town centers too.

A call for new mods... again.
I know a couple months ago Sixty made a post where he asked for mod volunteers, but that was a small part of a post that got really wrapped up in all the sidebar stuff. I'd much rather start fresh with a new post and some more details about what I'd like to see from new mods.
With all the news coming out about the definitive editions and even Age of Empires 4, this sub is going to get another surge of activity it hasn't seen since HD was released. Our sub is bigger than all other Age of Empires subs combined. While we will try to keep this sub focused on Age of Empires 2, you can't deny there's going to be a lot of members in this community interested in new Age of Empires 4 news. With the definitive editions coming out, we're going to see a change in the playerbase. And we're also seeing a surge in esports competitions. All of this adds up to a need for some new mods. We haven't added a new, permanent, mod in 4 years.
With this post, I would like to add two mods to the squad and would like for them to fulfill specific functions that I'll detail below:
- An Esports/Tournament Mod
I really regret not having a discussion thread up for the EuroCup. It's not that I couldn't do it. I just didn't think about it, and I should have. If you volunteer for this position, that sort of thing would be your responsibility. You should be ready to create discussion threads for any major ongoing tournaments. (If you participate in any sports subreddits, think of this like a "Game Day" thread where people can come and leave comments while the games unfold.)
Another issue with these tournaments is it's hard to get details on when they're starting and where you can see them. This mod would be expected to create a weekly or once-every-two-weeks thread detailing upcoming tournaments and where to watch them (depending on how many are actually going on, obviously.) This would be a great way to promote smaller tournaments as well.
This mod needs to be unbiased. Covering tournaments no matter what platform they're on will be important. You might not play HD, but you should still promote tournaments on it. Of course, that also means you need to be someone who's active in the voobly community to know what tournaments are happening there.
- A Community Engagement mod
For this mod, I think it's about time we started leveraging this 28,000 villager population into something more than a stagnant economy. Let's start getting active. I'd like to see someone volunteer for this position who doesn't mind hosting a game night, or finding volunteers to host a game night. If you can stream, maybe we stream the game night for people who can't directly participate.
The game night would be a big thing of course, but there are smaller things a mod like this can do as well. Much like the first mod can create discussion threads during ongoing tourneys, this mod could create discussion threads about a variety of topics. Maybe if a popular YouTuber releases a new video, we could have a community discussion. Or have a Strategy Sunday thread where we break down major gameplay strategies. Or a thread where people can post recordings of their play and have it analyzed. Things like that don't have to be unnecessarily complicated, and these are just ideas.
Basic requirements for applying:
-
You need to be active on Reddit and in this community.
-
Tell me which position you want.
-
Don't let the power go to your head. For the most part, modding is 90% spam and douchebag removal. It's not really very fun.
To apply:
-
Send me a private message and convince me you should be a mod. This is important because sometimes people get volunteered when they don't want to be or aren't really as serious about it as others are. Going through the minimum of effort at least tells me you've thought about it.
-
Post a public comment here stating your intentions because I'd like the community's viewpoint on this as well.
Understand that I'm not trying to overload you with things you have to do as mods. These are all just ideas. You will be free to do whatever the heck you want, and I invite you to come up with your own ideas when volunteering. If there's a different angle you'd like to bring to being a mod, please share it with me.

A couple questions before buying aoe2 on steam
I've played Aoe on and off for a decent amount of years, but never competitively or anything. I read something about matchmaking on a steam review and was wondering if someone could explain how it all works.
Is it built into the game like in sc2? (I found aoe2.net and was wondering if you primarily play there) Are there plenty of people playing so I won't have to wait too long for a game? Are there enough bad people so that I can ease into trying to play at a high level?
Thanks all!

I'm a high schooler who's interested in Physics, and i'm looking for a good place to begin.
Hi, as I stated, I am a high schooler who is interested in physics. I have been doing a fair share of research. However, I feel as if I am still relatively uneducated, and there is a unestablished baseline of knowledge that many people in this subreddit share. I have not taken physics yet, hence my lack of knowledge of the field.
I'm looking for the basics of physics. Introduction to light and specostrospy, and anything you would deem detrimental to my understanding of physics.
Thanks in advance.

What will the stream be a 123hrs stream or a 135hrs stream ????🤔🤔

I main Zeus and I've noticed that in my build order, if I go into farming late, it usually ends up biting me. I noticed higher-elo players also defer to caravan and farms for resources later on. This is an ancillary point, but when you're that deep in mythic and have decent gold and food coming in, is it worth it to micro villies on wood?

Cavalry archers
Many civilizations like the Frank's and Slavs get heavy cavalry archers but not thumb ring, which makes them seem quite bad with only 50 percent accuracy.
Taking this into account it seems odd that a civ would get upgrades that it will never, ever, get. So are heavy cavalry archers with no thumb ring ever worth making or do they just make the technology tree pretty?

I know that I should have had defenses ready, be it walls or troops, but I'm having trouble learning to macromanage all of my villagers, and my economic and military development. What should I be spending my resources on when I get to the Feudal age? And how do I make sure that I have a steady flow of all resources? Any and all advice would be appreciated.

What is the difference between Torque and Mechanical Advantage?
From what I can tell, both of these forces are used to amplify an inputed force and in the case of, say a wrench, a longer wrench has both a higher mechanical advantage and a higher torque.
So what I don't understand is how torque is not only considered different from mechanical advantage, but also is in the perpendicular direction of the plane in which the force is applied.
Any and all responses are appreciated!

Cav Archers, what's the deal?
So in between furious practice sessons, I was watching some Resonance commentary, and, well, there were a few games with Cav Archers. Now, I never cared much about Cav Archers, as they always seemed to be an utterly pointless unit. But, Res brought up the point of Bloodlines and Thumb Ring, two technologies from AoC that make them... not so bad, on paper. Again, I have minimal experience with them, because most of my AoK games were pre-patch, and there really wasn't much game there except boom to imperial to build Trebs and kill TCs. HUGE meta shift happened in AoC with the nerf, newer maps like Yucatan and generally, Flushing actually became a strategy that was useful. Which of course... caught me flat footed as hell when I switched to the conquerors.
So, What's up with'em now? Bloodlines gives them 70hp, which means they can tank a mangonel or onager shot now, as well as just generally not dying as quickly to Xbows. Thumbring dramatically changes their accuracy, meaning they can now hit non bunched up units. And, heck, I guess Parthian tactics is a useful tech, giving them more armor, as well as a boost to killing pikes.
So.. What good are these guys? I'm thinking that they would make decent raiders in the castle age, as they do get pretty tanky for archers with 70hp, allowing them to run past towers or standing troops, shoot a bunch of arrows into villagers with thumb ring, and then run away again, being a general annoyance and killing villagers.

What's a good mental model for what it means that the flow of time isn't constant in general relativity?
General relativity says that, as I move my finger around in my office, through Earth's gravity gradient, the "flow" of time at my finger tip is constantly changing (though by very small amounts, ~1020 or so.)
What I haven't been able to understand is what does that change in flow mean when you try to understand time. In other words, the usual mental model is that time flows the same for everything in your office, say. But that's not correct! Time flows slower for things closer to the floor than to the ceiling (unless you have a really large mass hanging over your head...)
Another way to ask the question is: ok, suppose I have a small charged black hole floating in front of me. It's charged to hold it in place. Let's assume it's big enough that the Hawking radiation isn't enough to worry about. I stick my finger near it (but not too near.) The tide is bearable. I can pull my finger out if I want to. Now time is flowing slower at my fingertip. What happens? Can I feel the difference in time flow? Does my finger appear red-shifted?
I know it's a kind of fuzzy question, my apologies. While I can easily work out the math, it seems clear to me I still don't really understand what variable time flow MEANS.

the treb RNG is actually disgusting and can basically throw away a match like it's nothing
1 treb can potentially win against 3 trebs
trebs have 15% change to hit other trebs...that's a disgustingly low chance and promotes RNG shots
since treb wars rarely involve other units (due to the stalemate of castle+units defending them) it's game breaking

Is it possible to know if there is a specific place where the Universe is expanding?
I mean for example when we imagine the Universe as a ball, or as a sphere, it represents only the surface of both, right? But the spherical surface has only two dimensions, very different from the four dimensions theorized by Einstein and the fourth dimension is related to time. So, can we say that space expands in time?

Hey everyone!
Gamescom was an incredible experience for me. I'd like to thank everyone who has been involved in these events leading up to gamescom, everyone who made the trip out to the meetups, everyone who has been a part of the community. Without all of your collective dedication to being a fan of the game, we wouldn't have had this opportunity. In fact, I'd argue the Age franchise would have been left to rot if not for the AoE2 community, and now we have some big changes to come.
Personally, I began creating content two years ago because I loved the game and thought it would be a good time. I genuinely never expected or thought things would have come so far in 2 years. It's truly insane. I never really had a passion or goal to work towards in my life, and now I have found a passion in casting. Thank you for that. I have worked really hard to get where I am today but the community has inspired me to do so. While Age of Empires 2 is the best game ever, it wouldn't be near as good if not for the community. In two years I've gone through a lot of stages. I still remember... September of 2015 ZeroEmpires hosted me and I was soo happy. I was freaking out, I had maybe 10-15 viewers before his 500 viewer host. Fast forward and two years later I'm working with him and other great people in Germany at Gamescom. It went from me being freaked out by a WololoRaid to casting at Gamescom in two years. That's not the type of progression one should ever expect and it happened. It's mind blowing stuff, and I credit the community for it. From the top down everyone is incredible.
I was only in Cologne for a few days but every moment was memorable for me. Thursday night I met the amazing people behind FE, many important people in the MS community, alongside Zero, Killerb, Nili, Shine, Robo, TheViper. It was surreal sitting next to the best player in the world, and all the other casters/admins i have worked with for so long. My personal favorite memory from the night was the conversation with Nili and Shine, two guys who have played together since the early 2000's and reminised on dozens of amazing memories. Friday Nili and I did a stream on Mixer which was really unexpected for me. We sat there for two hours and presented the game to many new faces and did a hell of a job. I was expecting to be nervous but once the cameras were on I was pretty focused and calm. Later on that day was the Cologne Meetup. There we so many people there! It was a blast. Amazing people, amazing conversation, great fun and many laughs. I got to meet people I've only seen in Twitch chats, only talked to on discord etc. It was awesome meeting every one of you.
Gamescom was something else. WE ESPORTS NOW BOYS! Seriously, 6k prizepool, players flown out to the event. All the equipment there dedicated to an AoE2 Cup. Hell yeah! Again, truly something special for our game. There are so many variables going into an event like that. It could have been so easy for a stream to not function properly, for the actual event to go wrong. All in all there were relatively minor issues, and the team handled it. When the stream went live Zak and I looked at each other in relief and after that things continued to go smoothly. Thousands of new faces saw the game during the event, during the stream, during the events in the week leading up to it. I couldn't have been more pleased. Every caster did a great job, the games were incredible from the players. The crowd stayed strong to watch til the very end. I was exhausted and sick but I completely forgot about it because of all these factors. Thank you all.
Special shout outs to the casting crew. For many of us that was the first time casting in such an arena and we did a great job considering. This includes Zak as a host before and after. Shout out to Zak and Robo for being badass admins, the work that is never seen nor appreciated by everyone enjoying the show. Zak's hard work for years in esports gave us this opportunity, Robo flew here from aussie land and didn't miss a beat. Shout out to the players for being good sports. There are plenty of expert gamers in other games that are complete jerks but you four were top class individuals on top of players.
Truthfully I'm overwhelmed with emotion and exhaustion after the entire trip. I'll try to get something out in video form next week if I can. Much love guys! Woo Woo

(∂/∂q - d/dt ∂/∂q*)L = 0
then it appears that the Lagrangian for a system is in the null space for that operator. Is this point of view used anywhere that you know of? Is there meaning in finding the eigenfunctions/eigenvalues of this operator?

An important question dealing in relativity and preformence outcome
There are first some things you need to understand before you can answer this question
Monitor outputs 75hz of which only 75hz can be seen at a time anything above or below will result in a visual delay relative to that of what is being rendered.
Monitor outputs 1ms constant visual delay of which can only be effective if there is no delay from rendering frames above or below 75hz
If above 75fps (uncapped frames) there is chance for inconsistencies in visuals and movement however it can reduce input latency
If capped at 75fps constant there is no visual or movement inconsistencies and there will be a constant 13 millisecond input latency
Understand that input and visual latency are not the same thing
The question is; should you play at 75fps constant, or uncapped if you want to perform as best as you possibly can?

A summary of Gamescom, Reflection & Thanks.
Hello everyone, what a crazy week it has been. I'm taking some time today to reflect on everything, so here are my thoughts. The first section is about the LAN event on Saturday followed by some general thoughts about the week overall. This is going to be a very long post! So I'm going to add this to the very start: Please complete this poll about Mixer, it's very important for us to get some statistics about the stream: http://ift.tt/2wMmEEP
First, thanks to everyone for tuning in or attending the live event. It was a very special opportunity to do something on this scale and we learned a huge amount from it. We know that it wasn't perfect, but we also believe that overall we did a great job with the resources we had.
Promotion: Many people have been saying that they did not hear about the event in time. While it was very difficult to promote things from Germany (especially as robo and I were all hands on deck to run the event) I do feel as though we did a good amount of promotion in the weeks leading up to it. This included posts on social media, newsletter email to our mailing list, info in the escape discord and talk about the event on the qualification weekends. We could have done more, and next time we will make sure to do that. If you didn't hear about the event, please consider joining our discord: http://ift.tt/2xGkraA
It was also a challenge to promote the Mixer stream because it's completely new for so many people. When we say "Mixer" people don't automatically know it's a live streaming site like when we say "Twitch". Instead they think: "wtf is Mixer?" This does not work in our favour :p
As far as viewer numbers are concerned: we are very satisfied. Microsoft seem happy as well which is good but of course we know that the viewers would have been much much higher on twitch. It was also a bad time for the USA (which make 20-25%) of AoE viewership. With all things considered I believe we did well to reach 1500 live viewers during the finals on a completely new and unknown platform. And overall 40,000 people visitors to the page as well, which is higher than we usually get for our twitch events; also leading me to believe that many had technical problems.
Production -Mixer: Why? We know that Mixer was a drawback for the event, however, without making the deal with Microsoft to stream the event there we would not have had a $6,000 prize pool and would not have had additional support for the other expenses. The LAN event had a huge cost associated with it. Flying the players, covering accommodation and rental of the stage would have been too high a cost for Escape Gaming to bear alone. This was the compromise we made and in the end I feel like it was worthwhile. We will see what the future holds but this event does not mean that we are abandoning twitch. However, if there are future opportunities that are only possible if we make a deal to stream on mixer then of course we will consider it. It's always a matter of cost-benefit as KillerB would say ;)
Technical Problems As mentioned at the very start of the post, it seems like a lot of people had trouble with Mixer. This is something that I will pass along when it comes to doing an event review with Microsoft; so please give details about any problems you had. I have no doubt that this affected the viewer numbers significantly, but this event isn't about the viewer numbers as much as the experience gain and the opportunity to do something cool for AoE2 at the biggest gaming event in the world! Robo and I have probably gained multiple levels, I think Robo may have even evolved into a MegaAdmin during our all-nighter to get things ready on Friday.
-Quality: Bad- The stream start was delayed by one hour due to an audio problem, fortunately we managed to get it fixed fairly quickly. The audio in the venue was fine but there was a solid humming noise being output to the stream which would have made it unwatchable. The audio equipment was a stack taller than me (and I'm tall!), we had to have a specialist come and fix the problem for us, which after an hour and half of tinkering he managed; saving the day!
Aside from the initial delayed start I feel that the slight green tint was the only stream fault that we were responsible for. This was caused by a mistake in the settings of our capture card. We did not want to risk fixing it because when we tried to fix the issue before it caused OBS to crash and some other issues. The setup was a delicate balance and far far more complex than simply streaming from home! It was a brilliant learning experience though and this knowledge will hopefully carry forward into future events.
Good- Personally I felt like the show ran very smoothly, we had a really good setup with multiple camera angles, fairly clean transitions and good sound quality. The overlays could have been more advanced but we decided to keep it as simple as possible simply because of time constraints. Robo and I were running the whole show from behind the scenes and we were overwhelmed as it was! Adding the extra overlays to the stream would have tipped us over the edge I think. At least this time.
We had no drops and minimal frame drops, as far as streaming is concerned that's a big win 11!
The casters all did an incredible job. Of course, casting from home is second nature to all of us now; but being able to transition to the stage and take it in their stride was very impressive. Nili, T90 and KillerB gave fantastic commentary. They were very professional and quickly got to grips with the equipment and setup that we were running. It was also very cool to see T90 fly in from America especially for this event. Both he and Nilpferd contacted me immediately asking if they could be involved; of course the answer had always been yes! I also want to acknowledge what an amazing Interviewer KillerB is, his segment with the Forgotten Empires team was really impressive given that it was organised at the last minute. His ability to ask great questions off the cuff is a very special talent. And on the topic of FE, thank you to Cysion and Cedric for coming to the stage to show off Definitive Edition and give out some AoE merch goodies! Personally I would have loved to cast a match and was originally pencilled in to do two. However, after just 3 hours sleep the night before and a huge focus on the production side of things I felt like it was best not to. Huge thanks to the other casters for doing extra there, its very tiring casting for such long periods but even more so in the hot and loud environment of gamescom.
Also thanks to the local German players who helped us around the place with translation where needed!
Live- I feel as though the live show was a better experience than the stream. Aside from the one TV which was coming on and off (nothing we could do about that) everything was very smooth and good quality for the viewers. The only drawback was the lack of seating, but aside from adding $10,000++ to our budget to get a bigger stage there really isn't anything that could be done about that. The game is nowhere near big enough to justify this investment. Even without seats the crowd stayed from start to finish and we saw huge numbers of people walking by and stopping to check it out. More people probably saw the stage and the live event than the actual stream over the course of the day!
I feel like everything looked very professional, from the lightning to the sound to the stage setup. Everything was straight forward for the players (our top priority) and the competition was fair. Many people were asking if the players could hear the casters. We provided noise cancelling headphones and in combination with their in-ears and the general high level of noise in the hall players were not able to distinguish anything valuable from what the casters were saying.
Event: We were quite ambitious on the number of games that we thought we would be able to fit in. Keep in mind that this was our first ever full live production! We had to cut two matches down from bo3 and bo5 to bo1 and bo3. After each game we had to swap out the pcs as each player had their own pc to use and have set exactly how they needed. Overall this was a great way to do it, but the extra time needed was not factored in. This compacted with our hour delay at the start meant that we couldn't quite squeeze everything in. Gamescom had a strict 8pm finish time, at about 8:15 security came along and booted everyone out. Time constraints are a real issue with live events and it isn't easy to just add extra time to get the games finished. All in all I'm glad that we got all of the games in and finished at 7:58, two whole minutes to spare and enough time to say some thankyous on stage at the end 11
The only big problem that we had was forgetting to grab the recorded games off of the PCs. We didn't remember to get them when we left gamescom (we were in a big rush as everything was being torn down around us within minutes of 8pm). By the time we contacted them to ask if they could send files the PCs had already been taken away by Gigabyte and the rec games were gone with them. We're sorry for this, and hopefully we won't make this mistake in the future.
Attendance: Wow. I am blown away with how many people turned up for this event (and Nilis football meet on Friday. Huge thanks to him for arranging that!). So many fans of the game came from all over and it was amazing to see so many famous faces from the community. It's a rare opportunity and was a real pleasure to be able to arrange such an event which could be enjoyed by so many. The only drawback for me personally was a lack of time to really socialise as much as I would have liked. But everyone else was able to spend lots of time talking and enjoying each others company. It was great to be able to talk face to face over some drinks with so many. Personal highlight may have been playing hacky sack with Vipers cap after a heavy drinking session in an Irish pub with some guy from Ubisoft who was buying us shots. We had such a great laugh! On top of that, being able to meet people who have been following the stream for a long time, it's great to be able to put a face to the username and connect on a whole new level :D The AoE community is really special, the fact that so many of us were able to get together and feel right at home is a truly amazing thing. Thank you to everyone who came, and next time we do something like this I hope so see even more people! It was open for anyone to attend, so don't be afraid to join in next time around.
The rest of the week: I don't think anybody expected so much in so little time. AoE2 and 3 Definitive editions and AoE4 all announced on Monday. Of course, it's been a busy week, starting with KillerB and I appearing on the announcement livestream and then followed by a week of networking (and dealing with very big hangovers), meetings, streaming and of course setting up for our very own event on the Saturday. Monday Event- I'll keep this short because KillerB already posted a great thread on Reddit about this: http://ift.tt/2wMyLC0
I'll just say that first it was an incredible opportunity to be so intimately involved with the game. We did a lot to shape our segment and the production did amazingly well to accommodate us. Overall the event was a huge success, in fact, everyone there was super hyped and loving it. Sure, it was very noob friendly, but the 55,000 people watching were also mostly noobs. The hosts did a fantastic job (and their job is not to know AoE!!) and honestly, it was just a very well done event. The venue was decked out with cool props and people in costume. The atmosphere was super cool and the production was brilliant.
Meetings & Networking- We met with many of the Microsoft staff and even a couple of guys from Relic. I was very skeptical about these new announcements at first, especially given the track record with AoEHD, but coming away from Cologne I feel very confident. Not only did the Relic guys have a huge passion for gaming, but the things that they were saying showed that they had a good understanding of what Age of Empires means to so many people. They acknowledged that community feedback is going to be important throughout development (and that's going to start as early as next month). They also spoke a lot about how they want to create a game that feels like Age, but that also has fresh and exciting gameplay as well. I can't talk about details (Much like I haven't been able to talk about aoe4 for the last 6 months), but I feel positive. I expect Age4 to be at least 2 years away; but I also expect to be intimately involved with the project so it is very exciting. I hope that I and the others involved can help to steer the project in a good direction.
As for AoE2 Definitive edition I think we should be confident about this too. Let me tell you why. 1. If Microsoft screw this up then they also really hurt their reputation when it comes to Age4 as well. Something they can't afford to do. They have set a huge pressure on themselves to reach expectations. 2. Speaking to people about this project shows that they recognise what needs to be done to make DE great. Hearing this from the mouths of Microsoft people without having to tell them: hey you need to improve x, y and z gives me huge confidence. As for what DE may include, well, that's the exciting part. But one that you will all have to wait and see!
The future of Escape Gaming is hopefully positive, we would like to do more events. Right now we are starting plans for something a little bigger, and have an exciting side project which I just know the Age community will love. There will be a small break between now and our next thing; but keep your eyes open for that.
Overall I think that the renewed commitment to the franchise from Microsoft is very exciting. I expect there to be more events, more tournaments, more meet ups over the next years... and, hopefully we are only just at the foot of the mountain right now. For now, I am exhausted, and will take a couple of days to rest and recover from some gamescom flu as well. But things are moving in a good direction, life is good and Age of Empires will live on.
