A friend asked me this question and I became increasingly unsure as my answer progressed. Initially I imagined plates and pepper grinders floating up into the air, due to the reactive force of the table surface. But if gravity instantaneously disappeared so would the reactive force. So if the air was completely still, wouldn't everything stay as it is on the table?
