A Simple Trick

It can be hard to keep track of your scouting, even in the early game when there are fewer units to keep track of. I even see pros often leaving 30% or more of the map unscouted by the early to mid castle age. The pattern seems to be to use the initial scout unit to look at your base's immediate environs, then to look at your opponent's base and the space in between the two bases. From here deliberate scouting often stops with incidental scouting by forward bases and armies traversing the map leading to more of the map being incidentally scouted by other activities.

The final stage, if the game gets there, often sees the players trying to scout the last bits of the map in the late castle through to the end of the game as both sustainable map control with castles, keeps and bombard towers becomes possible along with a growing need and capacity for resource consumption. Further scouting of the rest of the map by the initial scouting unit ceases relatively early in the game. As the demands on the player's attention grow, really beginning in the feudal age the initial scout unit is often sacrificed in a feudal rush or worst of all left idle wherever the player lost the attention capacity to care about its scouting ability.

None of this is necessary.

Many players know that by selecting a unit and holding shift while right clicking at various points on the terrain before finally right clicking on a final point causes the unit to travel between each of the appointed points in order as a series of way points. I don't believe that it is widely known that this same process can be accomplished by holding shift and repeatedly right clicking on the minimap. Once a player senses their ability to pay continuous, ongoing attention on the initial scouting unit begin to wane they can simply hold shift, spam right click across all unexplored parts of the minimap and then finally right click without holding shift within the player's own base. From here, the player can continue to dedicate their attention to playing the economic and military aspects of the game, safe in the knowledge that the scouting aspect is being taken care of autonomously (though inefficiently) without the need for a corresponding, ongoing drain on the player's attention.
