Player profile confusion AOE2 (Steam)

Hi all, firstly I have an issue where I have beaten almost all the campaigns but I have not got the achievements for some of them, I heard this is because it tracks it based on a single AOE2 user profile, rather than your steam account. I imagine this only happened because I changed computer at some point.. and then reinstalled AOE2... then because I now had a different user profile it kept the levels I had completed so I could progress.. but because it was now a different profile... and there is no way of telling WHICH levels were completed as that profile... I have not got the achievments when completing them and there is no way of knowing which ones I would have to re-do.

Secondly (still related). I went to a hotel, and took my wife's laptop (which had her account and AOE2 user profile on it)... logged in as me on steam, then synced it up thinking I would get my user profile. But alas, when I opened up AOE2 it still had her user profile as the active and only one. Even worse.. when I got home again and logged into steam on my home machine it now said my wife's profile was the current and only one on my main machine!! So now I don't even want to continue with the campaigns knowing how screwed up it could all be.

TLDR:

1. How can I get back my lost profile/s
2. Is there absolutely any way of finding out which campaign missions have been completed by a certain profile?
3. Are the profiles stored on your local machine, in the cloud... on steam... in some universal void?
