Steam purchase? Or is there still hope for my original disks?

I used to play a bit of aoe2 on voobly using my old windows 7 OS laptop and disks (mostly conquerors). That was a few years ago though and since then I've been using my current laptop running on windows 10. I've tried multiple times to install the game for the past year or two and always end up frustrated that it doesn't work out even after trying to Google my way to an answer.

Is anyone running the original disks and win10 that might know what the problem is? Or does everyone run it through steam and the time has come for me to buy a game I technically already own?

Quick edit: the problem isn't that it won't play on voobly. The problem is that it won't play at all, even offline.
