Got stuck in really late imp on arena without relics

We were both Byzantines in post imp and he kept pumping out cataphracts because he had all the relics and elite skirmishers to counter archers. I had a ton of stables and archery ranges and a stronger economy although there was no gold or stone left in the map. I kept attacking with huge armies of hussars and elite skirms but they kept doing a bit of damage and melting. At some stage he started gaining map control by building bombard towers but he played much slower than me and I new that if I manage to counter his army I could raid his eco and finish the game. Any ideas what I could've done? I ended up giving up...
