So I finally started playing through the campaigns of the Forgotten DLC in the HD edition a little while ago and having just completed the fourth campaign (Sforza), I have to say I've been extremely impressed and I'm looking forward to finishing the rest of it.
I find the scenarios quite meaty and engaging with lots of cool little twists here and there on what you'd normally expect from an AoE2 campaign, and even Bari didn't feel too short at just 3 scenarios given how much there is to do in them. The maps also feel like there's been quite a lot of effort put in into making it visually interesting and unique. Many vanilla AoK/C scenarios are somewhat boring visually by comparison.
If I had one major complaint it's that the writing isn't so great. I'm still interested in the characters and their stories, but the way it's conveyed simply feels a little amateurish. Many of the scenarios also felt like they could have used a little more polish. A couple of times I had to lookup what to do because I wasn't being prompted on my next course of action and usually I had simply missed some trigger by not moving a unit onto the right spot or something. There was also a strange bug with the Alaric campaign where random AI players were spawning at the start as if it were a random match, though they didn't end up ever really disrupting anything.
Anyway, this brings me to the topic of this post. I do plan on moving onto the DE at some point, and when looking through the changes I noticed that the Forgotten campaigns had received some quite substantial changes, much more so than any others. Now I expected some extra polish, but it looks like many scenarios, and even the entirety of the El Dorado campaign have been replaced (although I've only just started on El Dorado, perhaps it doesn't hold up as well as the others?)!
So I just wanted to hear people's thoughts on this. Are the changes more or less significant than they seem on paper? Have any good scenarios been tossed that could have perhaps been kept? Is it an overall improvement, or just a different experience entirely?
