Are there any games that take the gameplay and content of CBA and improve on it?

CBA is a pretty old scenario, with a simple premise:

Two teams of players, with each player given a base with castles, gates, towers and walls. And each player auto spawns their civilization's unique unit.

I consider unique units the main content of CBA, which might be non replicable by a competitor (much like how you can't use mario's goombas and koopas).

Gameplay is as follows: Raze enough enemy buildings and you're given villagers to build with, ergo new walls, new gates, and access to more generalized military units that everyone can get, plus you can make more regular units than you can unique units! (But each regular unit takes away pop space for your unique unit).

Get kills to upgrade your units. Destroy enemy castles to reduce their unique unit spawn rate, destroy all of them to knock that player out of the game.

And that's CBA. My question is, hasn't anyone made a standalone game that does it better than a scenario in aoe2?

Ideas for networking that imo could be done better by virtue of not being on the aoe2 engine: allowing more than 8 players, letting players jump in and out of a role (i.e. player 8 and player 2 switch roles), letting players control allies units (player 5 drops, player 1 controls his units), hotswapping players (player 3 gets bored and leaves, a new guy joins the game within 5 minutes)
