Sorry if this is something thats been mentioned a bunch in the past and its been put to rest. Maybe theres some reason for this that you all know about and I dont?
My friends and I all play regicide and its way fun. Ive always personally kind of considered it the definitive game format. Give me large or larger maps and 400 or 500 pop cap!
Been playing this way since AOE was on a disk (minus the >200 pop cap) and I finally played my first few ranked matches on random map. It was exactly what I expected, which is to say not really that fun. Fast AF rushes, 15-20 minute games.
It just feels so... idk like playing a 3 lane modern shooter as opposed to playing a shooter with big well designed original maps.
My strategies and build orders and game knowledge all revolve around regicide. There are so many fun scenarios and fun improvisational situations you can get into when playing regicide on a big map that I cant imagine ever happening playing random map with the "appropriate" map size recommended for the number of players. And all my skills/experience just seem to mean nothing at all outside of my little friend group lol.
Im not salty. I dont expect any of that stuff to transfer well to random map on smaller map sizes. But... i dont like playing random map on smaller map sizes!
Its just so fun to get into deep crazy booms, get to where the stone/gold on the map are running out and youre trading at the market at ridiculous rates, waging relatively slow campaigns for map/resource control, getting to the point that youre sending 150 villagers on a suicide mission to take down a few castles and with so damn many of them theyre actually moderately successful, building secret bases, trying to keep a bajillion things going at once, getting to the point where endurance and the mental fortitude required for being 2 hours deep start to matter more than fast mechanics, and having big fat ugly meat grinds!
On random map it seems way more important to have perfect build orders, have strong micro game, its much more punishing to respond with or attack with the wrong kind of unit, ect. Ect. Ect. Im sure ive made my point. I mean its not surprising that its like that. Ive played plenty of small map/non-regicide games before (albeit with less competitive adversaries) and thats always how those games have gone. Thats why Ive never liked playing that way.
It just feels like there is so much potential to this game that the community at large doesnt tap into and doesnt get to experience. Like the rest of the world is playing a different game than me. Like the lack of a ranked regicide precludes the kind of play that I would argue all day long is a hell of a lot more fun!
I dont mean to disparage on people who like the current competitive meta. Theres obviously a lot that goes into being good at it and Ive got respect for people who can rush me and crush me so fast. Maybe I just have a grass is greener attitude and the regicide-y meta im imagining would look a lot closer to the way it is with ranked random map than Id like to admit and im just a noob. Maybe ill try a few deathmatch games tomorrow and that will be closer to what im lookin for...
Anyone else feel the same way? Am i just chasing windmills and yelling at the clouds? Anyone wanna illuminate me about how im totally misguided?
I feel bad for anyone out there who likes to play the game the way I do but isnt fortunate enough to have a big pool of like-minded friends that Im realizing I am so very lucky to have.
Just felt like whining and waxing melancholic for a minute. Thanks for reading all that.
TLDR: why don't the developers mandate a 90 minute treaty length for all games?!? I want to play simcity/tower defense!! How do you turn this on
