It seems like with this lords of the west DLC they basically just split off factions that were already in the game with the Italians and Franks to represent smaller cultures that made up the larger group. This is pretty cool and I would like to see them do it with the Germans so they could represent more than just the monastic state that conquered the Baltic states.
Among others I can think of there's the Bavarians whom the Austrians are descended from who eventually formed the Habsburg Empire that lasted until WWI.
The Swiss which were famous for inventing modern pike warfare and made the Infantry a respected force in the field battles of Europe once again.
The Saxons who formed the Hansa trading league that dominated the Baltic sea for centuries.
These are just a few of the ideas I had off the top of my head so if you have other ideas feel free to add them.
