Cartography from the Dark Age

So I was wondering if anyone ever put the Portuguese team bonus to particularly good use. It's a team only bonus (the only one except for the Spanish trade bonus), and while the Spanish one usually kicks in mid-late game, the Portuguese one is readily available.

Did you ever see any top players using it creatively (post links if possible)? Have you? How would you explore its full potential?
