Alright here are some of my ideas to balance the swordsmen.
Swordsmen line: 50f 20g cost
I've seen multiple Goth players use their lousy knights over longswordsmen despite the massive discount. 60f 20g after you dump more food and gold into that upgrade cost is just awful in the Castle age. Why does basic infantry cost as much food as a guy and his horse? How much does that idiot eat? Villagers cost 50f and can haul about a billion logs over the course of a game. Swordsmen just stand around until they are killed by arrows. I don't think this will make man at arms rushes overpowered, either. Still need the gold. Hell, give man at arms 0/0 armor if they are so overpowered at 50f 20g.
Upgrades
-
MAA: Same. MAA can be brutal in the feudal age and that upgrade cost is a fair trade off setting the attacker back.
-
Longswords: down to 100f 80g, with a bit faster upgrade time. This will further incentivize their use in Castle, their use currently being as rare as Charizards in Magic the Gathering. Stats are fine with lower cost.
-
2H Swords dude: 200f 100g, with a bit faster upgrade time. 65HP. Holding a big ass 2 handed claymore is tough, these guys obviously hit the gym more than the wussy longswordsmans. get 5 extra HP.
-
Champs: 500f, 200g, with a bit faster upgrade time. It's imperial age and the elite infantry are coming to whoop your ass, and steal your female vills. Hitting imp and having drooling cavemen with clubs is pathetic, but the insane upgrade time and cost to get Champs is too punishing. Stats are fine. If you guys feel this Champ line will be overpowered, fuck it, give regular archer line a small 1 or 2 damage hidden bonus. As if they don't already get screwed by all the other gold units.
Also Condottieri balance would be nice and this idea is the simplest and the best and if you don't think so, whatever that's fine you're still cool. Upon reaching imp Italians and allies immediately unlock the Condottorinos upgrade, costing something like 300f 200g, and having an upgrade time. Gating Condottuccini behind something small like this will add a little time and at least SOME investment for such a great unit. Their cost of 50f and 35g is fine, they hairy and greedy Italian men and need 15 extra gold to go out and die.
I could go on about Berzerks and Teutonic knights and how their sexy capes merit massive buffs and cost reduction but I'll stop here. Thanks for reading, I guess.
