Arena players know that there is an extra berry bush with five pieces. Sometimes it spawns in your walls or in very safe locations.
I tested whether to mill the extra bush with Britons, a civ with no mill, farm cost, farm rate, forage or wood bonuses. I assumed double-bit-axe and horse collar is researched and wheelbarrow has not been researched to simulate the early feudal age conditions.
The time it takes for two villagers to gather 625 food from farms and 150 wood (to build the 2.5 farms) is 19:45. In a weird way, the time it takes two villagers to gather 625 food from berries and 100 wood is also 19:45. At the end, you end up with a mill, but the time it takes to build the mill is excluded.
Milling the bush takes 100 wood while laying two farms cost 120 wood so you instantly save 20 wood while you lose it in the long run due to the slower foraging rate.
My conclusions are:
-
Mill the forage bush if deer spawn is quite near.
-
Mill the forage bush if you are Japanese, Franks or Mayan.
-
Don't mill the forage bush if you are Teutons or Slavs.
-
Do whatever you like if you are any other civilization.
I am sorry that it is quite inconclusive 11
