Differences between public beta and release version of a game.

In my childhood I had a disk with AoE 2, which, I suppose, was a public beta test version. I can remember two differences between that version and official release. First - strange AI behavior. In campaign AI players that supposed to be your enemy can create an alliance with your, or your ally can turn against you. I'm not so sure about this, but it is how I remember game. And second difference, in which I am sure, is different map in first mission of Barbarossa campaign. There we start near the left corner of the map, while in release version starting position is center of map.
So, is there any way to determine which version it was back then? Maybe some footage or maybe I can download the public beta version somewhere?
