Finally starting to play on Voobly after many years casually playing this game, and I'm having trouble understanding why everyone insists on playing with civ set to random. It takes time and effort to prepare and practice strategies, so naturally it makes sense to specialize in one or a few civs that suit one's preferences. Doesn't going random defeat that whole idea? Being able to play every civ well also seems like a high barrier to entry considering how many there are and how differently some of them operate.
The other RTS I follow is Starcraft 2, and in that game random players are extremely rare, and essentially nonexistent in the pro scene. It's even against the rules in some tournaments to switch races between games.
Obviously, I don't want to discourage people from going random if they want. It certainly does mix things up at least. I just want to understand why its frowned upon for me to choose my own civ.
