Background - I've got my ten wins and my coustillier profile pic unlocked. My win rate is 50% on Arabia, though my gut feeling is that they are one of the weaker civs.
The big issue for me is that I dont think they're a particularly fun civ to play. I feel they are lacking an identity - its basically struggle with a handicap until you have somehow massed enough substandard (but early access) cavaliers/paladins to win the game. The 'poor man's Franks' seems an appropriate label (though ironically you had to pay more money for the privilege of playing them).
Maybe the devs noticed this identity problem which is why they threw in all the weird stuff that hasn't gone down too well in all sections of the community. More than the 'weirdness' factor though - it just doesn't meaningfully impact your gameplay:
- Post-nerf coustillier - another knight-line substitute but you couldn't afford the castle to train them in the first place.
- Unique techs - It only made sense to research them in one game I played, and very late on. Incidentally, I lost.
- Eco upgrades - sounds exciting but in reality it has almost no effect. You can get wood and farm upgrades as you age up and thats the only play that vaguely makes sense.
Maybe I'm missing a trick (but certainly not the one trick the Burgundian pony is designed for haha). I do also have an aversion to the Franks so maybe that's the root of my problem! Anyone enjoying the Burgundian experience?
