Question about Voobly

First of all let me apologize in advance if this has been asked a million times. I play the HD version on Steam and have convinced a group of friends to do so as well, and we're having a blast. The thing is I would like to try Voobly as well and I've heard you can play on it using the HD version by installing some patch. My question is: if I install said patch, will I still be able to play HD with my friends no problem or will it require some fiddling to switch between versions everytime I want to play one or the other? Also some pointers on how to get started on Voobly would be appreciated. Cheers!
