New player here, how to deal with unoptimal food rng?

Hey all new player here.

As of right now I'm practicing a fast castle BO, but something that nearly always seems to force me to end the game and restart is not having something the BO requires.

The beginning of the BO goes:

  1. Start building 2 houses
  2. First 6 vils go to sheep.
  3. Next 4 go to wood.
  4. Next (11th) vil lures boar
  5. 12th vil builds a house by the berries then a mill on the berries
  6. Berries
  7. Berries, now 3 on berries
  8. 15th vil lures 2nd boar. (ONCE BOAR UNDER TC) Build 3 farms using boar/sheep vils. Use one to build house too

I've been playing on Black Forest primarily, and sometimes I don't start with any nearby berries for example, or can't find the boars/2nd boar in time, not enough sheep, etc. When I don't see something that the BO clearly outlines then I just quit and restart the match on a new map. I have yet to make it to the 10 minute mark because I keep quitting since my starts are never perfect.

But I know a skill that needs to be developed is improvisation, and so I'd like to ask for some advice. How do you personally go about trying to work around a start where your food is not ideal? What do you look for? I see deer but never do anything with them for example.
