Definite Edition or HD for older systems?

Hey there,

Me and some friends want to get back to the good old days and play some Aoe 2 again for fun.

Some of them have pretty weak systems and it's not likely that they will get an upgrade in the near future (one guy has about 6 GB DDR 3 L memory for example). Looking at the minimum requirements of the two versions, the HD version seems to be much lower. Would it make sense to stick to HD because of that? How big is the difference in performance for weak systems in practice?
