I've recently started playing aoe2 again (The last time was about 2008-ish) and thought I'd play through all the campaigns.. I'm not much of a competitive multiplayer fan. I'm currently in the Saladin Campaign, on the fourth mission the Siege of Jerusalem, when I noticed something odd.
I must of spend the first 20 minutes of the game booming, no walls, no defences, just using mamelukes to take out scouts, and the odd enemy unit. However, as soon as I put down my first castle the enemy started sending these large waves of oddly combined units. They seem to only care about the castle, because they weren't attacking the weak side of my base.
Has anyone got an explanation as to why the AI only start to care when you put down a castle? And why they will lose interest in fighting you when it's gone?
