I simulated a Deathmatch AI Tournament

The last days I had no idea what to do with my life so I host a 1v1 AI Deathmatch Tournament. In the past (one year ago) I did the same but as a random map tournament. I thought a Deathmatch Tournament is cooler because the fight starts directly. And yes, some matches were indeed very entertaining.

The settings were:

  • Deathmatch
  • Tiny map
  • Hardest AI's
  • Arabia
  • Starting Age: Post Imperial
  • Game speed: x8
  • Pop: 200
  • Victory: Conquest

I matched up the games with the help of random numbers in Excel. The goths got a bye (31 is not a power of two). I marked winning civs with a black boundary.

In the end the Koreans won.

My thoughts:

Siege civs are dominating in death matches. 5/8 civs in the quarter finals have strong siege.

Paladins are maybe overrated? Only one Paladin civ (the Celts) came to the quarter finals.

Civs with good eco bonuses and no good late game options had a very hard time.

The Genoese Crossbows are fucking good in mass. The Italians won two matches (against Berbers and Persians) with no high HP Units. Just Archers.

The Portuguese Feitoria is almost OP in the late game (around 70% of the games last more than 3 hours).
