Was playing Mongols a lot recently, and some things really leapt out at me for being both historically innaccurate, and in some cases, ridiculous.
Below I list a proposed changelog for the Mongols to make them more historically accurate, yet remaining balanced.
Barracks:
Remove Champion Upgrade. (The Mongols did not have any Heavy Infantry. They relied on speed and misdirection for their battles. While there certainly was an infantry component to their armies, it was definitely not suited to a prolonged melee)
Remove Squires.
Archery Range:
Remove Arbalest (The use of the Crossbow diminished significantly after the conquest of the Song by the Mongols.)
Enable Hand Cannoneer (The Mongols did use gunpowder after the subjugation of the Song in China) However, they did not use it as a primary siege weapon, hence no Bombard Cannons)
Dock:
Remove Shipwright
Remove Fast Fire Ship
Defensive Structures:
Enable Keep (Contrary to Popular belief, the Mongols did, in fact, have fortresses, which were strongly built and heavily manned.)
Monastery:
Enable Block Printing (This historical technique was in widespread use throughout China, Tibet, Mongolia and Korea).
Remove Atonement
Enable Redemption
Enable Illumination (The Secret History of the Mongols was an Illuminated Manuscript)
Blacksmith:
Remove Plate Mail Armour (Mongol infantry did not wear heavy plate. Historical finds that only cavalry, and cavalry commanders would wear thick lamellar plating for themselves and their horses. While some infantry did use iron armour, it would be more along the lines of scale mail.)
Enable Plate Barding Armour (For above reason)
Enable Ring Archer Armour ( Mongol armour for mounted archers would be made of a mix of silk, leather and iron plating)
Mining Camp:
Remove Stone Shaft Mining.
In light of the huge nerf that the Mongols received in Patch 4.8, I think these proposed changes would bring them back to being a highly competitive civ, and one seen more often.
It makes no historical sense for the Huns or the Turks to have better equipped Cavalry Archers than the Mongols. The Turks, historically did have a large edge with buildings and gunpowder, and it was the Turkish use of Bombards which spelt the end of the Byzantine Empire. Turkish Horse archers were prevalent, such as in the case of the Seljuks - but these would be even more lightly armoured, due to the heat of the desert.
At sea, the Mongols were not conquerors by any stretch. Multiple invasions of Japan were repelled, and so the elimination of Fast Fire Ships and Shipwright seem fitting for this.
