The umpteenth suggestions I have seen about the balance give me hope for the vitality of community around the game. That said they can be a bit too much from time to time, and even where I've tried to keep an open mind to the suggestions I've often left feeling they were kinda retarded.
The problem is that the only way to fix their inherent retardation is to subject them to discussion, which is why I am posting the suggestion here as I left the stream feeling we didn't do an adequate job of ironing all the kinks of this idea.
Teutons bonus:
+1 melee armour for cavalry staring in castle age.
The teutons have a strong enough wood/food eco bonus that starts helping prominently on most arabia style matches from early-mid feudal onwards and it is here that the Teutons can hold their own against other decent civs like the Britons and the Vikings. They start getting outpaced around mid-castle, where as helpful as their eco bonus is for having a decent boom going, their options leave something to be desired on any map where the meta is not monk/mangonels. Their knights lack husbandry and so it is difficult to use them against any other good knight civ like the Franks, Slavs, Huns or Berbers while you are doing something wrong if you are making crossbows as the Teutons.
The buff potentially gives them an edge in Knight matchups, even though you can get outmanoeuvred as Teutons, the other civ's knights would just be more hesitant in picking a fight.
The problem is that the knight line is already a "I kill all!!" unit in early castle age. Does this bonus make them potentially OP in early castle?
Teutonic units are also already more resistant to monks, leaving only pikes and camels as options against their knights if you are a civ with weak archer options, both of which are somewhat weak to scorps which the Teutonic tech tree incentivises the addition off. Does this buff make the game less fun by pigeonholing the opponent too much.
Teutons are also a popular DM civ, do we risk making their Paladin too OP?
This bonus also does little to help against a player going x-bows, do the Teutons need a buff for this situation?
