I loved playing strategy games since I started playing Age of Empires and Warcraft in the 1990s and I still play whatever strategy game that I encounter (granted that the game does actually involve some form of mental challenge and requires keen strategy because I encountered a few strategy games that I felt where a bit easy or were not that challenging).
Lately, while strategy games still exist and they still have a decent and loyal fanbase (and I am also assuming that they are slowly increasing in popularity because of eSports games such as Counter Strike, Rainbow Six, MOBA games and even fighting games involve a lot of strategy, practice and learning the games' mechanics), there is not that much exposure to strategy games like RTS or turn-based games (even though all games involve strategical play of some kind. Even DOOM involves its own form of strategy as well). Even Starcraft 2, which was one of the most viewed eSports game, has lowered in popularity and viewership lately even though it is still an eSports game and it still has players worldwide and still being updated and tweaked by Blizzard (even other RTS games have their own tournamenets like COH2 and DOW2).
There are even those moments that where I wonder if the video games of today (at least the most popular or mainstream games) are becoming too casual and decreasing in mental challenge or stimulation (like Rainbow Six involves creativity or Deus Ex, Hitman and Thief involves resourcefulness and perception) or whether I am exaggarating or maybe I am being exposed to the wrong kind of games.
I could be wrong here considering that there are video games of all kinds and you will pretty much find a game that is right for you if you look hard enough or perhaps the more "casual" games or perhaps other games get more marketing attention or simply because of their name and brand like Call of Duty or Battlefield (despite their infamy, they are still fun in their own way), and some strategy games still get a lot of love and care and are still being developed or supported to this day like Age of Empires 2 HD (with plenty of mods) and XCOM 2 (also with plenty of mods. And I do mean plenty!!!) or even Dark Souls and Sekiro
