New to game and can’t counter longbows. Help!

I just started playing a few months ago. I know the starting build order and have experimented with rush and fast castling. I think I have the beginner stuff down ok. So here is the issue- I feel like at low levels I’m always facing britons. The last 2 games I faced britons in arena and bf (although I prefer open maps). I was Mayans. My plumed archers got outmatched while my mangonels and skirmishers couldn’t get in range. They also had trebs so they just slowly creeped close whole destroying from a distance while I couldn’t get to them. What should I do in that situation? Is there a counter or am I screwed once they mass them? Do plumed archers fare ok against them? I tried rushing but the maps don’t suit it.
