New to the game - formations

So I came in from games like TW, and I am wondering if having your units actually use formations do anything? In games like TW striking from the backs or sides do extra damage, whereas so far, the formations dont seem to do anything, and having units break formation and fight in a big uncoordinated blob seems to be more useful like warcraft 3 or something. What are the formations actually good for?
