Leaving aside that you can train your unique unit from it, does it actually outshine three closely clustered towers (which cost around the same amount of stone) defensively? The combined damage output (if there's only one enemy unit) of three towers is higher, and they can independently target three different enemies as well. They're also easier to fit into small nooks if you're space-constrained or just to prevent enemies getting to all 4 sides to attack them. And depending on how offset they are from each other, the amount of area they protect also scales further. So if you're not building into your unique unit but want to guard an area, wouldn't it make more sense to just build three towers instead?
