New player - guidelines for basic play?

I've loved Aom ever since I was a kid. I played it back then like 15 years ago then on and off shortly. I really love the aesthetics, the feel, the units and the mythology behind it.

I ran into boit's youtube vids again and started getting pulled in. Basically, I want some basic tips on how to play the game. I don't intend to get good enough that the game stops being fun and starts being work and reward.

Just basic outlines. How to start with villagers? Is maxing out villagers necessary? When to go for town centers, how to go about gold mines, which myth units are good etc?
