Hi all,
Apologies if it feels like this topic's been done to death, but it feels like Obsidian Arrows isn't a very popular technology at the moment for two reasons:
- It's a niche technology that doesn't actually have that much use, especially in 1v1s
- When it is researched, it kinda removes the need for siege and makes archers perform in an unnatural and (for lots of people) not-fun way.
Instead, what if Obsidian Arrows gave a boost to Plumed Archers, by adding +1 attack vs. unique units and cavalry?
I think this would be good because:
- It adds to the Mayans' options against the Goths in late game. I know Plumes already do +1 bonus damage against Huskarls, but it doesn't help enough in late game. People say that you have to kill Goths with Mayans before late game, which is fair enough, but giving a small boost to the chances of Mayans vs. Goths in any game >30 mins might be a good thing. I can't think of any particular problem in any other unique unit vs. Plumes match up off the top of my head.
- Elite Plumes have 1 less attack than arbalest, which is a big problem against heavy cavalry. This change would make them more viable in late game, especially in team games. (Of course, given the general toughness of Plumes anyway, it might be slightly too good).
- Giving this kind of boost to Plumes might encourage players to build them more, which is a good thing, since we all love seeing unique units.
What do people think? Does this make Plumes too OP? It feels like they've fallen out of favour a bit with Mayan players lately, and maybe it's just nostalgia, but I'd love to see them back.
Thanks for reading my essay.
Edit: Oh, and, Merry Christmas!
