Why do we start with building 2 houses?

Got my friend into playing aoe with us,

He likes to build 6 houses at the start of the game though, sometimes more, and I struggle to explain to him why it's a bad idea and why you generally start with only two houses.

Can someone explain why it's not very helpful to build a dozen houses at the start?
