How do I deal with camels without access to camels?

I just had a game where I scouted my enemies intention so I though a mass of archers might do it because they don't get piece armour.

But they were quickly overrun.

So then I tried to mix in some spearmen, upgrading them. But by then he had heavy camels and they didn't seems to be as effective as I had hoped. It was kind of working when I mixed the archers with spears. But he had speed I suppose.

He basically spammed camels and trebuchets. Do spears not work against camels?

I was Magyars. Should I have gone into my knight line? I have full horsey benefits.
