Probably a stupid question, but can a player on MS store match up with a player on Steam on in a AOE2 DE multiplayer game?

I'm thinking of purchasing the DE recently, and I would like to know as I'm planning to play against my friends who are playing on both sites.

And I would also like to know whether getting it on Steam or on MS store would be better.
