Attacking food animals with military units

I remember when I played AoE2CE, attacking a boar with a scout cavalry would reduce its food reward to 0. There was also a tip that advised to attack food animals with only villagers. Fast forward to today, I just watched Spirit of the Law's comparison of Eagle Scout and Scout Cavalry in which he tests which is better at luring boars. Does this not remove its food reward?
