Countering Eagles as Vikings

Last night I was playing a land/water map and I decided to go full boom on the water with a few gallons. I was slightly ahead in the score (I'm a 1550ish on HD) when he ran in with a ton of eagles, like 20 of them. Admittedly I didn't stone wall which I should have, esp since it was a team game. When I saw the eagles I immediately started walling and against a better player it would have been too late. But against him, it wasn't. He let me live for way longer, but honestly I've never been eagle rushed before. Should I immediately have upgraded my militia to long swords then gone after him or should I have immediately used knights? I hadn't upgraded anything except for fletching, like I said I was stupidly booming too much. I guess I should have gone knights since I still had militia, and I should have added a few onagers but I was tilted
