Game keeps crashing to desktop - nothing but issues since Feb 28 update

Any fixes out there for this problem?

While playing either singleplayer or multiplayer matches and after a length of time the game crashes to desktop. Sometimes there is an error message, other times there is no message. The error message reads: "A running process may be interfering with the correct operation of AoE2 DE. This may be caused by anti-virus software, malware, game overlays, or other active processes on your PC. For more information visit www.ageofempires.com/support"

Of course there are no answers on the website. It is frustrating because I have closed all processes running the background yet the game crashes at irregular intervals. Sometimes it is 10 or 15 minutes in, other times it is not until late game multiplayers after 40 minutes. This winter has been a long, sad history of issues with this game but by far this update has been the worst for stability.

Solutions I have tried up to this point with no improvements include: reinstalling, verifying integrity of game files through Steam, closing ALL background processes and disabling Windows Security + firewall, monitoring hardware usage in Processes during crashes, and sacrificing my first sheep each game. I also had to upgrade to Windows 10 to play this game back in November.
