It's astonishing how important securing gold resources in this game is. The only way to get gold otherwise is through tradeships and friendly ports but if it's a map with barely or no water you are screwed. In aoe2 you can at least sell your resources for gold at your marketplace or build carts who can get gold from friendly marketplaces.
