My first multiplayer game ever (I won!)

Like the header says, I just played my first aoe2 multiplayer match in my almost 20 years of playing the game (I started when I was 3 or 4, it was my first game) and I won! I really wasn’t expecting to win because I’ve been trying to get better in preparation and have been struggling, but when I started my first match I did much better than I was expecting. It gave me a few things to think about, and I’d like to ask you all a few questions.

I have some general strategic ideas under my belt, but I’m lacking in civ knowledge, multitasking, hot key use, and resource management skills. I’ve been looking for different guides and I found one from around 3 years ago but it’s outdated with the advice it gives. If anyone can point me towards a good source for building a solid foundation, I’d appreciate it greatly.

I played a quick game, 1v1, and I don’t plan to play ranked until I have a more solid base. But when should I start thinking about playing ranked, or should I even wait at all? I also am confused about some of the game modes and what the prep entails.
