Last patch Tatars got a new bonus where they receive two free sheep at their tc in feudal age and at every newly constructed tc. A lot of people love this change and have abused Tatars to no end (Badboy playing exclusively Tatars and renaming himself Tatarsboy), while others argue the combination of mobility, damage output through free thumb ring and extra elevation attack, and a safe and smooth boom has made Tatars over the top strong both on Arabia and on maps they weren't supposed to be strong on like Arena (watch Viper's video here: Are the New Tatars Broken? - YouTube ). It seems the general consensus of the community is the civ has been overbuffed and needs some rework.
In TheViper's above video, he says this rework should be to remove free thumb ring and/or the Tatar elevation bonus. I personally think that's the worst way to go by changing the civ, since their whole identity revolves around map control mobility and cav archers, and removing those bonuses makes them a rare "sheep" civ. The only non-sheep related bonus they'd have is free parthian tactics in imperial age. It's also too much work and many of us can agree the civ was nearly balanced before the latest addition.
A common suggestion I agree with is to give Tatars only one extra sheep when they get to feudal and build additional tcs in later ages. I like this change, but I want to argue it should be even more than that.
I have been a Tatars fan since the start of DE and I've greatly appreciated the many buffs they've received (buffs to Keshik, even more range on their trebs, FLAMING CAMEL, free thumb ring, buff to silk armour). I honestly think Tatars were fine at that point, since they felt smooth to play with and had a solid powerspike at every age-up (more food from sheep and delayed farms in feudal, free thumb ring in castle, free parthian tactics in imp). The lack of a mid-game eco bonus made me be aggressive, like I would if I played Magyars or Mongols. The hill bonus made me seize map control early and keep it. Their whole identity is to hit the enemy in multiple locations and run to a hill or a castle or town center when the main enemy force came to defend. That's both historically accurate and a nice new niche.
The main grievance I have about the new change is the extra two sheep for every new town center. No civ should be able to out-tech the enemy, have map control, have mobility, and have a better eco all at the same time. Making their boom above-average kind of goes against the mobile and aggressive playstyle they have.
Instead, I think they should have 1 additional sheep spawns at the tc for every age up. This doesn't translate to a very early and flexible boom like the current one does, and makes the Tatar eco more generic. Tatar players would have to choose between booming and seizing map control. It's along the same lines as 1 extra sheep instead of two, but doesn't apply to the new tcs.
Is it an over-nerf? Is it just right? Still not enough?
